Geographical Accuracy

Pros:

  • "Um, Whiskey Beach is set as two hours north of Boston and yet still in Massachusetts."
  • "Easy reading and enjoyable. But as someone who lives on the Massachusetts north shore, I can tell you if you drive north from Boston for 2 1/2 hours, you would be in Maine!"

Cons:

  • "Picture a quiet, picturesque Massachusetts town right on the ocean."
  • "Nora Roberts gives Whiskey Beach depth with a very believable and moving cast of characters."
  • "Believe it or not, this is my first Nora Roberts book. Really, I thought she only wrote trashy sweaty love pot boiler novels for some reason. However, I clicked on the wrong book and because my book purchases are one click, Whisky Beach appeared in my downloads. A quick scan showed me this was a mystery, and one set in my local. So I started to read, and then read some more, and then some more. I couldn't put it down and other reviewers say this is not one of her best. I can't judge that but for me, it was a well written mystery with likable characters and a decent plot. That it takes place around Cape Ann in Massachusetts made it that much more enjoyable and convincing as the local is spot on."

Character Development

Pros:

  • "I'm not convinced Nora wrote this. In all her books I have read, she is fantastic at character development."
  • "As usual Nora Roberts gave me an engrossing story which held my interest until the very surprising conclusion."
  • "I have read everything Nora Roberts has ever written. She is one of my favorite authors. Whiskey Beach is one of my favorite of her stand-alone books."
  • "I’ve tried several books by Nora Roberts and all but one has been a disappointment."
  • "This was my second time reading this one. Enough years had passed that I remembered some of the story but not the critical points."

Cons:

  • "The characters are flat and formulaic, especially the members of law enforcement. Even the protagonists hold me at arm's length, alluding to reasons why they feel as they do, but never quite convincing me."
  • "I read some of the reviews and believe that when you lose the ability to just be everything is a chore or needs to be overt."
  • "I just finished reading Whiskey Beach and I absolutely loved it! Eli and Abra are the perfect couple, and the setting on the beach made it all the more romantic."
  • "I liked this novel very much, but I also agree with many of the reviewers who found Whiskey Beach to be somewhat formulaic: the house on the hill, the historic, scenic, quaint town with its interesting and sometimes eccentric residents, a focus on some past event and its impact on the present, the quirky, but delectable hero or heroine (often a writer), the murder-mystery that isn't impossible to solve."

Writing Style

Pros:

  • "Typical Roberts... weaving a wonderful descriptive tale with thoughtful characters and incredible scenes vividly presented."
  • "Didn't see any of this coming. Such a great mystery WITH PIRATES! Great storytelling as to be expected by Nora Roberts."
  • "Nora Roberts has always been one of my favorite authors. She uses Word pictures to create a colorful background, then spins a good story with believable characters and just enough romance to make it spicy."
  • "This novel started out slow but once more facts came into play n you got to know the characters better, its AWESOME!"

Cons:

  • "The story has lots of plots the suspense as to who did what makes it a good detective book."
  • "Started interestingly enough but became a marathon, at least for me..........just drug on and on and on."
  • "I read a lot of Nora Roberts novels. I just recently came across this e-book ... I do not know when I have enjoyed a e-book as well as this one."
  • "First off, something is off with the positive Amazon reviews for this book."
  • "The plot is very good with interesting and believable characters."

Plot and Storyline

Pros:

  • "From beginning to end this was a solid read I can barely put it down and it's taxes and then I do taxes for a living so that made it very very hard to read and work but I was able to put them both together Nora Roberts is an amazing author."
  • "I loved it all - the story, the wonderful characters, the location, the history - all of it."
  • "Another great book of Nora Roberts! The plot, the characters all good and lingering as always!! Just the book to make you fly away for a place where you don’t need to be freaking about the pandemic times..."
  • "Pirate loot. Love. Murder. Moving on. A new love. More murder and intrigue. Roberts has done it again in another love story with twists thrown in that will keep you wondering until nearly the end! I loved it. And in think you will too."

Cons:

  • "About Nora Roberts Novels: I've been reading Nora Roberts for 15 years. She usually paints a very pretty picture of beautiful Americans fighting through some conflict to achieve their ideal American-dream happy-endings."
  • "A few formatting and editorial issues but the characters, plot, and description are the stuff Nora Roberts is loved for."
  • "Oh. Wow. I haven’t read Ms Nora in a while and had forgotten how well she wrote. How alive her characters and writing."
