Character Development

Pros:

  • "Character development for Violet's mother delves us deeper into who she is as a person and why she does the things she does."
  • "Every supporting character is developed enough you become attached."
  • "We get lots of character development, new world building, and new secrets revealed."
  • "The character development is strong for the most part, including peripheral characters."
  • "Characters well developed.I can not wait for the next book to find out what happens."
  • "The development of the side characters (in my opinion) was great, and I would love to see more in the next few books."
  • "I continue to think that Violet is seriously a bad ass lead character and she really seems to be coming into her own."

Cons:

  • "All the relationships feel weak and shallow; X and V are bonded, have a deep connection, but they both wonder how the other feels?"
  • "First, the characters are cardboard cutouts. They are not three-dimensional people and, certainly, not nuanced."
  • "I do not like Violet or Xaden as characters. They both are extremely boring and I'm just not interested in their story."
  • "Character development for some of the main characters felt either nonexistent or is such a drastic change."
  • "Characters are childlike. Long boring writing, no depth."
  • "But why then did the author have Violet become such spineless, cringey fool over Xaden?"
  • "What happened to the intelligent, clever and secure woman we were introduced to in book 1???"

Plot and Storyline

Pros:

  • "This does exactly what I want from a sequel; expand the world, learn more about my FAVORITE characters and heighten the stakes… and this did ALL of that and more."
  • "What a great read. So many unexpected twists."
  • "Absolutely Love all of the characters and the plot. Did not see the end coming what so ever."
  • "This series does a great job being unpredictable and keeping surprises hidden until the perfect time."
  • "The world-building is phenomenal, and the plot twists kept me guessing."
  • "The plot weaves a tale of good, evil, grudges, rival kingdoms, and evil wizards."
  • "The plot of 'Iron Wing' is a labyrinth of twists and turns."

Cons:

  • "Some of the plot development seems 'stagey'... as in, 'please, please option this for a t.v. series'."
  • "I also felt that one specific storyline was not necessary at all - the storyline regarding Xaden`s ex, Kat."
  • "At this point, I don't really feel compelled to read the next book nor do I understand how this could possibly be stretched to a 5 book series."
  • "I got extremely bored halfway through because the two main characters are so obnoxiously invested in keeping secrets from each other."
  • "So much more could have been developed about the characters and their families also."
  • "The second book reads like a first draft. Whereas the first book was sharp, tight and gripping, the sequel meanders without a point, and is full of uninspiring old tropes."
  • "Then there's the whole issue of the book feeling like it revolved entirely around Violet and Xaden's relationship."

Writing Style

Pros:

  • "It’s an honor to read such a wonderful, active, and intriguing story!"
  • "Again, the author went above and beyond when creating this wonderfully written book that flowed so well."
  • "Much respect to Rebecca Yarros for her creativity and talented writing!"
  • "Wow. This book! Definitely a slower burn than The Fourth Wing but it’s WORTH IT in the end and you’ll realize why the author slowly built the plot like she did."
  • "Yet another incredible book by Rebecca Yarros. Wow, the story has you consumed from the first page."
  • "Excellent creativity. Brilliantly written and executed. I do not think could be written any better."
  • "Rebecca Yarros masterfully crafts a narrative that is as enthralling as it is vivid."

Cons:

  • "Though I loved this book it dragged at certain points still good but dragged."
  • "What is it about Rebecca Yarros and writing absolutely lengthy and boring part ones?"
  • "The problem lies in Yarros’s skill as a writer. Parts of the book are difficult to follow because of several conversations happening at the same time."
  • "I had high hopes for this novel. It fell short and the writing was not good at all. The important parts felt rushed or not well explained."
  • "One of the things I’ve disliked about this book is how slow the story has been going, it gets uninteresting at some points, and I get bored."
  • "The majority of the first half was continually negative and so, so, slow."
  • "The author seems to have fallen so deeply in love with her characters that she lets them whinge on for pages and pages when she should really just tell them to Shut Up."

Physical Quality of Book

Pros:

  • "Gave an extra star because I was very happy to receive a book with sprayed edges."
  • "I love this book. I love all of Rebecca Yarros books she never disappoints highly recommend and not to mention the sprayed edges and the creativity she puts together with her books ❤️"
  • "If you don’t know the difference between hardcover and soft and looking for book with black page ashes- hardcover is your choice."

Cons:

  • "I am very disappointed as the page is ripped in half and I bought it brand new."
  • "I guess one way to force me to stop reading and get back to work is provide a book with missing pages! The book went from page 83 to 132."
  • "Can’t actually review the story because after page 482, the book repeats pages 435-482."
  • "The book had a defect causing one page to have some discoloration."
  • "Book came in with a few torn pages, and page discoloration. It looked like it had been used before and resold as new. Extremely disappointing."
  • "The black sprayed edges started rubbing off immediately. I didn’t even need a book mark it was so bad, I could tell where I had read up till based off of how much the black was missing."
  • "The binding broke at the top from the front cover within my reading the first 20 pages in my first session."
