Build Quality

Pros:

  • "Took me right back to childhood! Great game and great quality!"
  • "The hippos seem to be pretty sturdy still."
  • "It's made with a great design that comes apart easily and stores in a fun way."
  • "It's sturdy plastic & snaps together easily."
  • "The game board was sturdyBack then the marbles were actual glass marbles and not lightweight plastic balls with seamsBack then the hippos actually worked- They lifted their heads instead of just pushed the marbles around."
  • "The one thing that was pretty cool is that under the board it does make for easy storing and everything to fix back into the box which is great for putting & stacking with other games in the cabinet til next playtime."
  • "Also, the hippos come off and store underneath for easy storage! A great upgrade to a classic game."

Cons:

  • "All the fun of the old game and none of the craftsmanship. It’s cheaply made, the plastic is flimsy, the balls are lightweight, and I guarantee it will break within the month."
  • "The quality of this is total trash."
  • "The blue hippo broke the first time we used it, then after a couple months the green hippo followed."
  • "The blue hippo doesn’t work correctly."
  • "This is very cheap plastic. Must be very slow and careful playing as the hippo heads pop off and it is not sturdy at all."
  • "The hippos and game board are cheaply crafted. The hippos do not securely snap into place on the game board and have the tendency to come loose if you aren't careful."
  • "The plastic feels and moves like the cheapest dollar store trash. Lots of plastic flashing and poorly fit parts."

Gameplay Experience

Pros:

  • "Purchase this toy for a fun family game night. My 4 and 2 year old were able to play with us with no problems."
  • "Every child is just interested in winning and no matter how young everyone can play with a little help, just ask my 5 month old granddaughter."
  • "It's a great board game for such a young child since the rounds are over so quickly."
  • "It’s an amazing game to play with kids of all ages and also for adults."
  • "Fun as always for everyone and does hold up to the classic lever smacking abuse."
  • "The fun factor is the same as it ever was - for the most part."
  • "Our four year old twins are OBSESSED with this game! They have an absolute blast with it!"

Cons:

  • "The hippos mouth is made, makes it difficult to chomp down on a consistent basis to grab marbles, without jamming."
  • "The hippos get jammed constantly. Literally impossible to play."
  • "The hippos only work part of the time! The whole thing is a piece of junk!"
  • "The hippos don't lock in when they are stored under the base."
  • "The marbles get stuck in the hippo's throat, the black levers get stuck, and the heads don't lift high enough to eat the marbles."
  • "The hippos themselves get stuck while playing."
  • "The hippos keep popping off, and the levers always stick."

Value for Money

Pros:

  • "Update: I just realized I paid $10 for it, so not bad for the price. You get what you pay for."
  • "Good value but I'd pay more if I knew the quality was better."
  • "I bought it for 699 in a sale. For this price, I would take the toy."

Cons:

  • "Not the same quality as the original Hungry Hippos that I grew up with."
  • "Since it was bought a few months ago can't even return it. Stay away."
  • "I wish I could give 1 star. We purchased hungry hippos as a gift for our 2 1/2 and 5 year old. They loved the game for the first 10 minutes. However, after 10 minutes the necks of the hippos got stuck and the hippos would not swallow the balls."
  • "Build quality is rather poor, particularly considering the cost."
  • "Hands down the worst quality game I have purchased in a long time. Hasbro should be ashamed."
  • "Don’t waste your money until they improve the quality."
  • "The new design is terrible. The hippos separate from the board way too often, the levers jam all the time, the hippo mouths barely open, and the balls constantly jam."

Customer Service

Pros:

  • "Customer Service was good on issuing a refund."
  • "I did contact Hasbro and they did send a new game."

Cons:

  • "The product was used and doesn’t contain all parts, I had initiated return but nobody came to pickup this order."
  • "Great game, but it is missing parts. I tried to contact the Hasbro website, but it kept leading me to dead ends. I’m not impressed."
  • "Unfortunately, I purchased through my work so we are not able to make returns."

Storage and Assembly

Pros:

  • "I love that there is a container to hold the balls underneath the game when not in use."
  • "It even has a container that snaps on the bottom to keep the balls in."
  • "The neat improvements I appreciate are 1) it has a built-in storage for the balls (hippo food). that way you don't need to have a ziplock bag to keep them all. 2) The gameboard breaks down and the hippos fit snug on the back of the board for easy storage."

Cons:

  • "Who didn't like hungry hungry hippos as a kid? But you have to assemble/disassemble the game every single time. It does NOT fit in the box when it is assembled."
  • "Not easy to put back into the box for storage."
  • "The only way it fits back into the box is to take it all apart."
  • "Doesn't fit back into the box unless you want to take it apart and put it back together every time you use it."
  • "The parts snap on and extend out at weird angles and are difficult to even take apart to fit back in the box."
  • "This game is hard to store because you can't easily take off the hippos."
  • "I can't get the hippos to store as shown (turn game board over and they 'snap' in) so it's a beast to store."
