Usability

Pros:

  • "It works like a charm. It has a nice wide spread and is so easy to use."
  • "You don't need batteries or electricity to operate it; simply fill the hopper with your chosen lawn care product, adjust the spreader settings, and start cranking the handle."
  • "It is easy to control where the product is distributed (turn your body, crank it faster or slower)."
  • "The seed and the fertilizer were spread evenly."
  • "It is so easy to use and the crank turns very smoothly."
  • "This manual version is so much better than the larger troublesome battery version."
  • "It spreads evenly and gets the job done."

Cons:

  • "It occasionally will jam but reversing the crank will clear it just fine."
  • "The downside is that when I do a spread, I have to stop a few times to refill it."
  • "Could cause some hand cramping with the constant cranking you have to do while holding the heavy salt."
  • "But it will WEAR YOU OUT, with all the cranking!!"
  • "The small downside is that it does not have an edgeguard so preventing granulars from getting onto concrete pavement can be tricky."
  • "It will jam and not crank other then that it works great."
  • "Works great for the first few times. Then, if you’re from a state with lots of humidity, whatever you’re using, the fine pieces get caked up inside and starts to clog everything up."

Design and Quality

Pros:

  • "The spreader is built with durable materials that withstand outdoor conditions and regular use."
  • "All plastic in contact areas, so no rusting or freezing up."
  • "The build quality is very good and it seems sturdy."
  • "It's all plastic but I imagine it will hold up if you don't abuse it."
  • "The Whirl Spreader has a compact design, making it easy to store in your garage or garden shed."
  • "Durable plastic, I imagine it’ll last for years."
  • "It also appears to be rugged and should last for many years given reasonable care."

Cons:

  • "Deducted 1 star due to the extendable wrist support that slides out not staying in place."
  • "Not the most robust design because it is mostly all plastic."
  • "All parts are plastic. Some look cheaply made and put together."
  • "I am a little concerned that it isn't very robust and will break something."
  • "Seems very cheaply made."
  • "Some major components uses very thin plastic such as crank and opening cover. These components will fail very shortly."
  • "Could have been made much more durable. In my eyes it is junk."

Comfort and Convenience

Pros:

  • "This has the added benefit of the forearm rest to reduce the leverage on the hand."
  • "The arm rest is also a plus as it helps support the spreader and contents."
  • "Also has built in armrest."
  • "The extendable brace provides a forearm support that makes it fairly comfortable."
  • "There is an extendable arm brace which helps by taking some of the weight off the wrist."
  • "Even for my small women’s hands, it is comfortable to hold and to operate—just grasp the handle, squeeze the trigger and crank."
  • "This spreader gives me more control than a spreader with wheels."

Cons:

  • "The salt dust blows back to your face and in your mouth."
  • "You can't really hold it straight on due to the arm support unless you reach across your body with your right hand to crank."
  • "It has a brace, so you have to hold with left arm and turn with right, so you cannot switch hands when the left gets tired and sore."
  • "Hand and arm supports don't fit a medium to large size man very well."
  • "My left arm was really hurting after 5 min of use."
  • "My arm hurted so bad from the uncomfortable position you're in, I had to keep taking a break."
  • "Little sprays of salt came out as I cranked it- I would be out there all day using the Scott’s whirl."
