Durability

Pros:

  • "He loves the book, it's a bit short and takes a minute to read but he can't tear it down."
  • "I love the hard back book as they pretty much can’t be destroyed."
  • "I had hoped that it would have the sliding window, but it doesn’t. That said, it’s well constructed."
  • "Classic Eric Carle book and even better as a board book as my little one often tries to rip pages off of regular paper books."
  • "I do recommend the board book version for kids in this age range, since they like to experience everything in an up close and personal way."
  • "Everyone child loves this book. The board book design makes it very durable and child proof."
  • "This is great for the youngest ages. The illustrations are fabulous and the sing-song of the text is delightful for very small children. The board version is a big plus as you do not have to stress about torn pages with the littlest ones."
  • "My grandson loves looking at his books!! Look that this is a great quality board book that helps him learn his animals & colors & I do t have to worry about the pages getting torn."

Cons:

  • "The content is great but the quality of the board book is not. The paper board sticks together when it gets wet and when you try to open the pages again the print rips off."
  • "My son loves the book but the pages get stuck together from time to time and when he pulls them apart it tears the drawings of the animals, I returned one due to this and got him another one and same thing."
  • "Item was received in a timely manner but I was highly disappointed when taking this book into my classroom of toddlers only to find out that a brand new books pages stuck together! Seriously stick together to the point of on the goldfish page it ripped the picture!"
  • "Heads up. This new version was printed in China and there’s a Very toxic chemical that you can Smell."
  • "Update: Changing my rating because I can’t get the “folds” out of the pages. I will probably donate this book as I don’t feel it looked “New” & I wanted it to be special."
  • "The book is very cute but the one I received has a page that was printed completely upside down! I was going to give this as a gift for a friends baby shower but now I have to return it and get something else."
  • "This is a tiny book, and it is not interactive. The book also came with a scrapped up and dented cover."
  • "Ordered this for my little one who has read his other one so many times its worn.. I opened to the second page and IT IS UPSIDE DOWN.. all of the other pages are in the book correctly."

Educational Value

Pros:

  • "This story is great for teaching colors! We have a whole theme, with a felt story and more we use in our preschool classroom."
  • "This review is for the board book version of the book. It’s well constructed, the colors are vibrant and my grandson loves it, so still 5 stars."
  • "This is another must-have for your young child’s library. It’s wonderful and magical! Something about the rhythm of it will draw you in and keep you reading it over again!"
  • "I can’t remember why my son’s speech therapist recommended this book, but two days after having it, he can basically read the book to me just by looking at the pictures."
  • "I got this book for my son when he was 1 year old, and he fell in love with this book. His eyes were not the best as well (we've gotten glasses for him since) so the big bright colored pictures of animals got his attention as well as the repetitiveness and beat of the language."
  • "This book is great for the youngest ages. The illustrations are fabulous and the sing-song of the text is delightful for very small children."
  • "Got the hardcover, my kids love it, it’s simple big pictures, and in the back there’s all the animals and you can practice having your toddler point at each one, or for an older one have them tell you things like which has 4 legs, etc."
  • "I am a prek teacher and this is one of my favorite stories. Eric Carle brilliantly and very simplistically brings color and animals to life."

Cons:

  • "I was not really a big fan of this book. I think the pictures are a little strange (especially the one of the teacher and children) - for some reason, the art makes me think of Frida Kahlo - not what I would expect in a baby book."
  • "The board book is okay because tactically my daughter can turn the pages, but she finds this book boring. The pictures are flat and you can't feel them."
  • "This review was originally published on the DRTTMK website. There is no plot. It's literally just a repetition of the same phrase, followed by a different-colored animal each time."
  • "When my 18-month old brings me this book to read to her, I die a little inside. Seriously, could it be any more boring and repetitive?"
  • "I can't believe I have not yet reviewed this wonderful book. This book has brought me such joy every time I have read it to my children and other kids. I love the simple text that kids can even help reading it. It's a great book and kids will love it."
  • "Incredibly disappointed in the book. I bought it used in good condition but that is not what arrived. The book was in very poor condition with many pages ripped & damaged."
  • "This review was originally published on the DRTTMK website. Starting off, the title is a mouthful. People always say this book is for reading aloud, preferably in a group of children, but the repetition pounds into my head like a jackhammer even when I read it silently."
  • "A friend of mine recommended I try this book out after I finished Finnegans Wake (a significantly better read which I highly recommend). "Brown Bear" was dreadful. Hardly any dialogue - everyone is just simply looking at the next character to be introduced."
